This month we welcome a husband-wife team as USA’s newest board members.
On June 1st, Phebe and Bob Young assumed USA’s Webmaster/Newsletter responsibilities from Russ Manhold.
Phebe and Bob joined the USA Dive Club December 10, 2009. Since that time, they have been actively involved in USA activities.
This newsletter is their first contribution as new board members.
Phebe and Bob first met at Auburn University. They married, raised a family, bought a yacht (complete with onboard scuba compressor) and lived offshore until recently when they moved to Deerfield Beach.
They sold the yacht so now there is more time for grandchildren and USA Dive Club activities. Welcome Phebe and Bob.
Last January, new USA member Russ Hickman was appointed as USA’s 2011 Photographer/Scrapbook Coordinator. Unfortunately, Russ was unable to continue in that board position.
That’s when USA’s Audio-Video Coordinator, Roman Boszko, mentioned Eva Tomas might be interested in USA’s vacant Photographer/ Scrapbook position. Eva assured USA’s board she was not only interested but well qualified, having maintained other scrapbooks for many years. At the May 12th board meeting, Eva Tomas was appointed as USA’s 2011 Photographer/Scrapbook Coordinator.
Did I mention Roman and Eva are husband and wife? Yes, they tied the knot a few weeks ago on April 30th. Like Phebe and Bob Young, Eva and Roman are working as a team, making your Under Sea Adventurers Dive Club better than ever.
On Sunday, May 15th, Force-E dive shops hosted a Rescue the Reef 2011 fundraiser featuring a two-tank afternoon dive and BBQ in celebration of our Florida reefs. In spite of a threatening weather forecast, the skies cleared and the winds subsided, making for two great dives and hours of revelry at the after dive BBQ.
This was an event for divers and non-divers alike. Everyone had a great time. Reef Rescue demonstrated how to use GPS to track and plot dives, collect baseline data and document reef conditions. Thanks to South Florida Diving Headquarters, the dive boat captains and crew members, for making the dives safe and enjoyable. Thanks also to everyone who attended for showing your support and commitment to protecting South Florida’s threatened coral reefs.
The event was such a success the dive boats were sold out. So if you were not able to get onboard, Force-E is planning a second Reef Rescue benefit in June. Plans are still in the works but the scuttlebutt is it will be in the Lake Park/Riviera Beach area. There will also be announcements on the Force-E Divers Facebook page, where you can go to see pictures of Sunday’s dive and BBQ. Reef Rescue has also posted an online slide show of the event. Click here to view the slide show.
Everyone loves a great treasure hunt, and the Diving Equipment Marketing Association (DEMA) has officially launched their new real-life, environmentally-friendly, in-water game called DiveCaching. DiveCaching is an underwater variation of "Geocaching," a decade-old game that uses a GPS device and simple search skills to locate hidden land-based caches. Here's how it works:
- Divers hide a "treasure" or "cache" underwater and post the GPS coordinates and compass directions on www.geocaching.com.
- Other divers search www.geocaching.com for nearby DiveCache listings and actually dive to locate the cache.
- Once the cache is found, divers log their cache visit using the on-site visitor's log. The finder may also choose to photograph the cache, deposit an additional treasure in the container or simply return it to its original location.
- After returning to the surface, the finders log their visit on www.geocaching.com sharing their adventure with other divers around the world.
- "Waymarking" allows searching for and finding a specific landmark if you are diving in an area where hiding an actual cache is not allowed. Log your find on www.waymarking.com (sister site to www.geocaching.com).
In USA’s May 2011 newsletter, I encouraged USAers to contact their Florida Senators and Representatives to denounce the approval of SB 796 that allowed for less wastewater treatment, an increase in the amount of secondarily treated sewage being discharged directly into South Florida coastal marine waters, and the injection of sewage into the Biscayne and Upper Floridian Aquifers.
Your phone calls and e-mails may have helped Florida’s Senators see the light.
Bill SB 796 was never brought up for a vote and died as this years Florida legislative session came to an end.
The intent of bill SB 796 was to delay the implementation of 2008 Ocean Outfall Legislation that curtails the practice of discharging partially treated sewage into southeast Florida coastal waters. If passed, the bill would have allowed dumping to continue until 2030.
An identical bill, HB 613, made it through the Florida House of Representatives and passed 93-18 on April 15th. Click here to see how your representatives voted:
For background on this issue see: http://reefrescuealert.wordpress.com/
Once again, USAers mounted strong opposition against this attempt to prolong ocean sewage discharges onto southeast Florida coral reefs and coastal resources.

We were looking forward to our annual Easter Egg Hunt aboard Starfish Enterprise on April 24th, then while we all were driving toward the boat we went through a rain storm. Seas were supposed to be between 2 and 4 ft. but unfortunately the storm decided to stay in the area and the seas went up to 6/7 ft. None of the boats were heading out so we had to call it off. With those of us who were already there we did do our annual egg cracking contest and everyone ended up with blue, green or yellow fingers from the dye I used to color the hard boil eggs. First prize which was the last egg to not have a cracked end after smashing the ends against an other member’s egg was me, and no I didn’t boiled my egg into a solid rock. Second prize for the secretly marked egg was Bob Y. Some of us went out for breakfast afterwards to lift the spirits for the disappointed canceled trip.

On May 15th we held our 2nd Annual Beach Party. There were 4 shore divers, Pat S and son Kevin, new member Allen F, and Mike M., who went out with John for 1½ hours to the first and second reefs. We had our balloon toss which was won by teammates Russ M. and myself. The ladder golf game toss was won by John F scoring the highest points with the golf balls. And no, John and I didn’t practice at home. Once again we were struck with rain at noon and everyone ran to their cars, ending the picnic.
We had a wonderful day for our May 21st dive with Starfish Enterprise in Boynton Beach. We had a full boat of only our Club members. The seas and weather were both perfect. Lunch at Grumpy Groupers afterwards tops off the day.

Hospitality Hut
A Warm Welcome from the Hospitality Hut,
We are happy to report three first-time guests attended the May general meeting.
Heidi and Denis McBride, friends of Larry Townsend, attended their first meeting. Heidi does not dive, however Denis is an avid diver and was certified in 1974. He is looking for that special dive club. We hope we can be that club.
Next we welcomed Dawn Feuerman. Dawn is the spouse of new member, Alan Feuerman. We met Dawn again at the beach party hosted by Kathy and John Ficarra. Dawn does not dive, but we are sure to see her at our social events.
A frequent visitor, Frank Burnside accompanied his wife and member Mary to the May meeting.

Dave Goetz, an assistant instructor, attended our January 2011 Club meeting. Dave visited our booth at the Florida Dive Show held last December and enjoys spearfishing, lobstering, drift and wall dives. Dave’s friend, Carly Sax, joined us at the “Family Fun Day at the Beach”. Carly also enjoys spearfishing and both have submitted membership applications.
We wish to thank all first time guests and returning guests for their interest in our dive club and hope to see you all back again.
Why not visit our home page www.usadiveclub.com and click on the calendar button to keep up to date on all the diving and non-diving scheduled activities. You may also take a look at the photo gallery and see all the fun we have.
We wish you all ‘Happy Diving’.

Social Activities
Greetings from the Social Butterflies,
At press time we are in the final planning stages of our Lionfish seminar scheduled at the Boca Raton Force-E on Wednesday, May 25th. Looks like USAers have “filled the room”. To date, we have 28 members and guests planning to attend this very special event. See USA’s July 2011 newsletter for a full report.
Sunday morning, May 22nd, 15 USAers and guests gathered in Deerfield Beach for USA's quarterly Adopt-A-Street cleanup.
As usual, the 1.2 mile length of Natura Boulevard was divided into four sectors, i.e., northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest, thereby reducing walking distance to about 1/2 mile for each participant.
Teams members drew cards for sector assignments then donned bright yellow safety vests, gloves and USA Dive Club ball caps. Trash bags were provided to team members along with mechanical tongs to facilitate removing trash and debris from the roadside. By 9:00 AM the cleanup was underway; two teams working north-to-south, the other teams working south-to-north.
Earlier that morning, the Social Butterflies conspired to hide four hard-boiled eggs along the roadside. Each egg was specially marked, identifying it as a unique USA Dive Club Adopt-A-Street prize. This part of the cleanup is affectionately known as our Trash-to-Treasure. If you find an egg, you’re a winner. The special eggs were found and later surrendered for genuine Adopt-A-Street prizes, in this case cute little red carabiner clips capable of holding a set of keys and a small bottle of liquid refreshment.
Paul Molinari patrolled up and down Natura Boulevard in his truck the entire time providing refreshing drinks from the cooler and picking up trash bags along the way.
By 10:30 AM, the four teams rendezvoused, comparing size and shape of filled trash bags. Each bag was weighed and recyclable items were separated into clear plastic bags.
For the record, including Sunday’s haul, we have picked up a total of 1,268 pounds of trash and recyclables since USA started the program in 2008.
There was time for our traditional group photo before everyone headed out to Muddy Waters Tropical Bar & Grill in Deerfield Beach for a group lunch.
USA’s Green Team included Clare Anthon, Barbara and Sonny Barber, Kathy and John Ficarra, Jay Gillespie, Steve Jurczak, Julie and Russ Manhold, Paul Molinari, Bobbi Smith, Dave Smith, Larry Townsend, Bob Weybrecht, and Phebe Young.
Adopt-a-Street is a favorite and ongoing USA Dive Club social activity. It’s easy to join our Green Team and an ideal way to get to know fellow members.
Just contact the Social Butterflies at Social@usadiveclub.com. It’s always nice seeing new faces on our team.

Safety
Dear Members:
Hope everyone enjoyed last month's questions and the answers are as follows:
1. If an object is neutrally buoyant (does not sink or float) in fresh water, the same object placed into salt water would? Answer: Float
2. Imagine you blow up a balloon, tie it off, and take it to the bottom of the swimming pool. What would happen to the balloon and the air inside? Answer: The balloon will get smaller and the air inside the balloon will be more dense.
3. Imagine you turn a glass upside down, trap the air in it by putting it in water and take the glass down to 33 feet. What would happen to the air space in the glass? Answer: The air space would become 1/2 the size it was at the surface
This month's questions are:
1. You can prevent most surface emergencies (problems) by?
2. What is the first thing you should do with an injured diver at the surface?
3. Imagine you accidentally get tangled in something. What should you do first?
Good luck with these questions and as always if anyone has a particular scuba related question (I do not know next week's winning lotto numbers) feel free to email me.
Have a safe dive.

Liveaboard
The Caribbean Explorer II Luxury Dive Vessel www.explorerventures.com/cexp2/index.html
A Three-Island Tour with The Most Unique Itinerary of Live-aboard Diving
October 8-15, 2011
Trip is full - standby list only

The Saba/St. Kitts live-aboard dive vacation is now full. Unfortunately, we are limited to a maximum of 18 passengers. If you are interested in going on this trip, please add your name to the wait list. Placing your name on the wait list is FREE. Eighteen lucky USAers will be traveling to Saba/St. Kitts to experience an 8-day, 7-night liveaboard diving adventure aboard the Caribbean Explorer II. Julie Manhold is the trip leader. We have reserved the entire boat for USAers. A Full Moon dive is scheduled for Wednesday evening, October 12th. There are eight staterooms, all with private vanities, air conditioning and toilet facilities.
What’s a liveaboard? Just the most relaxing dive vacation you’ll ever experience. NO SCHLEPPING of dive gear. After you embark, set up your tank just once… that’s it. When not in use, your other gear is stowed in your private gear locker right under your seat. Wet suits are hung to dry. And you don’t have to switch over tanks. Your tank is refilled right where you left it. Warm showers and towels are offered after each of the 27 dives made available to you. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are expertly prepared as are the in-between snacks presented at the end of each dive.
What do you do between dives? RELAX… sunbathe, fill in your log book, read that novel you didn’t have time to read at home, take a nap, get to know your fellow USAers a little better while raving about the last dive. Your time is your own. Perhaps a land tour would be nice. If you’re not planning to make the night dive, enjoy a glass of wine with dinner.
With the exception of the airfare, this is an all-inclusive vacation. Includes 27 boat dives, all meals and beverages, gratuities, port tax, fuel surcharge, airport transfers, departure tax and free NITROX. We will be on our own Friday evening for dinner. We’re even throwing in the T-shirt to let the world know you’ve ‘been there and done that’.
Travel will be simple. On Saturday, October 8th, we fly nonstop from Miami to St. Maarten and then take ground transportation a short distance to the boat. While we sleep, we cruise to Saba where the diving begins. We then island hop and dive our way to St. Kitts where we disembark the following Saturday, October 15th, and fly home direct from St. Kitts to Miami.
You have the opportunity to make 27 dives on this expedition: 2 morning dives, 2 afternoon dives, and 1 night dive each evening. NITROX is free.
The Northeastern Caribbean is an intriguing area offering a blend of Dutch, British, French and native cultures on the most scenic islands in the Caribbean. Our unique itinerary will combine diving and optional land tours.
Saba is known for its submerged offshore pinnacles. The abrupt topography above the sea is mirrored below and the profusion of marine life attests to the early institution of the Saba Marine Park in 1987.
Underwater pinnacles -- spires of the same volcanic rock that makes up the island -- jut up from the deep blue and overflow with marine life. At Third Encounter, a notable pinnacle dive site, the surrounding deep water makes sightings of sharks and other pelagics common. Just a short swim away, an eerie spire called the Needle, not more than 30 feet wide at its apex, rises 250 feet and points up from the depths like Neptune's finger.
St. Kitts offers arguably the widest variety of sites - finger reefs, recent wrecks, and a variety of drop-offs that will capture your imagination.
When you purchase your own airfare departing from Miami, price for this trip is approximately $2,850. Book your own air travel.
